Enter Cranky Bear, Stage right

Cranky Bear
“The very cranky bear” by Nick Bland

I saw these at Christmas, but the picture book has been announced as this year’s ALIA National Simultaneous Storytime title. Just had to have me a Cranky Bear. Found him today in Dymocks, in the CBD.

See you on 23rd May, Cranky Bear!

New puppets

New puppets

Bargain shop stock tends to arrive in waves, and certain items can disappear without a trace. I thought I’d seen the last of the endangered animals puppets that were so prevalent in the bargain shops a few months ago. This week, several stalls at Paddy’s Market, in Haymarket, had cheap puppets in the same style and I found it hard to pass up the $4 parrot, kookaburra and kangaroo puppets. I even found a $1.50 key ring with a joey, who seems to be in the same scale as the kangaroo.

Twice more, with puppets

My bargain store collection of endangered animal puppets is getting a work out this week. Here are our next two Guided Inquiry Endangered animals (Stage 3 science & technology).

Once again, enjoy! Share! And please feel free to comment. More slideshows will appear as the term comes to a close. Please see the previous post re using Photo Peach with students.

Puppets for persuasion?

Puppets

The Stage 3 students are deep into a Guided Inquiry unit on endangered animals. At this point, we haven’t zeroed in on exactly how the students will present their new information, but we are keen to make use of the elements of persuasion, and effective use of Web 2.0 online tools. Over recent weeks, I’ve been noticing bargain stores with inexpensive, faux fur, glove puppets of a range of endangered animals, such as a koala, orangutan, polar bear, tiger, panda, elephant, two lions, a Tasmanian devil and a monkey. Each between $4 and $8.

I’m fascinated how the puppets might end up getting used.

Platypus
Above: Last-minute platypus! He was $16, but so cute I couldn’t resist.

Mr Squiggle (not) on “Collectors”

This week on the TV show “Collectors”, iconic Australian children’s character, Mr Squiggle, makes an appearance with his maker, Norman Hetherington.

“Hetherington talks about Mr. Squiggle, who went to air in 1959 for a trial season of six weeks only and lasted six decades for the ABC. The cartoonist and self-taught puppet-maker also shares Blackboard and many of his 400 puppets. It airs 8pm Friday on ABC1.”
